York`s PhD in Socio-Legal Studies is at the forefront of a growing number of postgraduate programs in Europe and North America in interdisciplinary legal studies. Our Ph.D. is the first doctoral program of its kind in Canada that is not based on a law school. This exciting interdisciplinary program builds on York`s innovative programs in law and society and criminology and its tradition of interdisciplinary research. Students accepted into our master`s and doctoral programs will join faculty with a strong commitment to research and academia. We contribute to the creation of an academic community of social law researchers through our participation and leadership in professional associations, as well as through our projects and published articles. Our program consists of scholars in law and society, criminology, political science, sociology, psychology, history, communication studies, women`s studies and law. Legal education and advocacy, legal history and theory, labour and administrative law, globalization and constitutionalism.

Our faculty actively participates in the creation of a university community of researchers in social law. We do this through our participation and leadership in professional associations as well as through our published projects and work. Contributing professors are leaders in the fields of international and national human rights, socio-historical approaches to law, transnational policing, immigration and border security, indigenous rights and global financial crime, as well as gender, race, sexuality and law.
